NewCold Rennes

CORAX at NewCold’s freezer in Rennes, France

In France, NewCold is building a new state-of-the-art coldstorage in Montauban-de-Bretagne, near Rennes. NewCold develops and operates coldstorages with a high degree of automation. Globally, the company provides advanced logistics services, is at the forefront of the use of the latest technologies, and works with leading food industry companies. CORAX SaaS WMS will control all in- and outbound processes in this fully mechanized coldstore.

The warehouse will use state-of-the-art technology, including automated storage and collection systems (ASRS) to automatically move and store products in the ‘dark’ high-rise warehouse. The equipment and operators are controlled by advanced software systems, including CORAX SaaS WMS, while keeping the products in optimal conditions, cooling all cooling rooms to temperatures up to – 23°C.

NewCold RennesThe construction of NewCold at Rennes is in full swing

This advanced cold chain solution ensures that processes are sustainable, traceable, fully integrated with the processes of NewCold’s customers and always at the forefront of technological developments. It provides a high and consistent level of logistics service and, above all, provides a more sustainable and food safety alternative to more conventional cold store solutions. The futuristic multi-customer cold store enables food producers, including Froneri as an annithenian, to optimize their cooling chain management, with more agility and responsiveness to better meet the needs of their domestic and international end customers, 24/7.

Bram Hage, Founding Executive Officer, of NewCold says: “With this groundbreaking, NewCold brings to Montauban-de-Brittany, Rennes, the Brittany region and France, 20 years of leadership in the development and operation of automated cold storage. Although our roots lie in the Netherlands, our heart lies with global food producers where NewCold can deliver value. We couldn’t be happier than standing next to B-Built, the main contractor, and our ankerklant Froneri.

The logistics processes in the warehouse are controlled by Davanti Warehousing’scloud and SaaS warehouse management system CORAX. NewCold has chosen CORAX wms for its scalability, logistical intelligence, easy-to-use interface and simple EDI options. CORAX is growing with the operation of the customer, new users can be easily trained and are based on the latest Microsoft technologies.

The state-of-the-art freezer is a joint design effort and construction by NewCold and B-Built. The facility will be one of the largest in France with a storage capacity of more than 700,000 m3, comparable to the volume of one million refrigerators for household use.

Davanti gaat voor Agile

Davanti trains entire company in Agile project approach

Yesterday we started to train the first group of our entire team in the Agile project approach.

What is Agile?

Agile was created in the early 1990s as an alternative method for the then prevailing way of project management according to the “waterfall method”. They wanted to address the well-known project problems such as high workloads, unattainable deadlines, budget overs, tensions between project members and quality problems. The question was whether there would not be a better project approach that would overcome many of the above problems.

Traditional project approach versus Agile

In the traditional project management methods, a thick project plan was and is made in advance in which one tries to describe the path to the result as best as possible and to estimate costs and time. It is the task of the project leader to try following the plan with the project team. The Agile approach is based on a different way of working: it is assumed that it is very difficult – if not impossible – to pre-conceive a project in a good plan and design. As a result, time, money and project achievements will always turn out differently than in the plan. So why spend so much time writing a project plan when it’s not convenient? Agile projects take a different approach where the timeline of the project is divided into a number of short iterations of, for example, 2 or 3 weeks. The team will then look at what is the most important work at that time. After a working period of 2 or 3 weeks, the situation will evaluated and based on the current achievements there will be decided how to proceed.

In essence, the Agile approach boils down to this: instead of creating a comprehensive project plan with designs and research in advance, you will start working directly in the Agile projects. In short time frames (iterations, timeboxes or in Scrum terminology: sprints) of about 1 to 4 weeks you build parts of the project. After that period, you’ll revisit what’s most important to do in the next iteration. This way you get to the end result in an x number of iterations.

Agile courseOne of the discussion cards during the course

The Agile Manifesto

The Agile Manifesto is based on four values:

  1. People and their interaction over processes and tools
  2. Working software over all-encompassing documentation
  3. Cooperation with the customer overcontract negotiations
  4. Responding to change over following a plan

Let us be clear that all the aspects mentioned are important and must be implemented. There needs to be a good contract and excellent documentation, but Agile shows how to achieve better and more realistic results by naming these preferences.

New insights

Agile brings a number of new principles and insights to projects such as:

  • Team members have much more to say about the project and are therefore often in several varied roles: consultant, executor, designer, planner
  • The design of a project result is gradually created and is hardly predetermined
  • Project steps are cut into smaller parts, making the work clearer and can be adjusted more quickly if a build element does not work out as desired
  • Teams are invited to try things out, activating innovation and creativity, and more motivation!
  • The planning of the project is based on the smaller elements and therefore becomes more realistic; as opposed to big deadlines in ‘a few months’
  • The team will start creating almost immediately and will not wait for instructions from a project plan

Building software

The Agile approach has shown good results when building software. The Agile methodology often used for software development is Scrum. Davanti has also been working according to the Scrum principle for a long time. Our Development Team has acquired a lot of knowledge and experience in Agile working and is very satisfied with this way of working. We have experienced many advantages in terms of regarding cooperation, planning and implementation in relation to the traditional project approach. But actually we want our entire organization to work Agile; that’s why we train our entire staff. At Davanti we like to learn and we want to apply the best way of working to serve our customers optimally.

Benefits for our customers

We also see advantages for our customers in the Agile approach in our WMS implementations.

  • Quicker and more flexible intervention in the event of any disruptions. By quickly investigating the cause together, it is possible to switch on quickly. There are no surprises afterwards
  • The customer has more influence on the processes, because he is himself in the Scrum team
  • There is a clear division of tasks and responsibilities; what does Davanti and what does customer
Data veiligheid CORAX

Are CORAX data secure in the Microsoft Azure cloud?

Are my data secure in the Azure cloud? That’s the concern of a lot of companies. Your data is your capital. If there’s anything you want to manage securely, it’s your own data and that of your customers. We at Davanti are well aware of this and have identified data security as a top priority. That’s why we’ve chosen to offer our online WMS based on Microsoft’s Azure Cloud environment.

How does Microsoft keep your data secure?

We believe your data is more secure in the public Azure cloud than in your private or managed data center. We will explain why below. First, some facts:

  • 85 percent of Fortune 500 companies use Microsoft Azure
  • Azure hosts 1.4 million SQL databases
  • 5 million organizations use the Azure Active DirectoryMicrosoft Azure
  • Over USD 1 billion annual security research and development expenditure
  • More than 3,500 cybersecurity experts worldwide
  • Microsoft Azure has the highest ISO certifications including ISO 27001 and ISO 27018
  • Latest features in AI and automation
  • 7,000,000,000,000 cyber threats are repelled by Microsoft every day. From attempts to force passwords from Live accounts to hacking, phishing etc.
  • Own choice for cloud location, eg. in Europe. Read more.
  • Optimal redundancy: Your data is stored in multiple copies and is always protected from unexpected events, such as network or power outages

There are many more fun and impressive facts, but the message is: it’s all about scale. The Azure cloud is huge and has an unimaginable number of users. The annual budgets seem astronomical, but these amounts are spread over hundreds of millions of users.

The Focus of Microsoft

The above mentioned impressive list doesn’t mean that you don’t have to do anything to protect your data, but it does mean that Microsoft Azure is doing everything possible to live up to its responsibilities – and that Microsoft can probably go a lot further than companies can individually.

Microsoft focuses on:

1. Safer identity
Securing systems, applications, and data starts with identity-based access controls. Features such as one-time sign-in and multiple authentication are built into Microsoft business products and services. They help protect your organizational and personal information from unauthorized access and make it available to legitimate users, whenever and wherever they need it.

2. Safer data
Data is the most valuable and irreplaceable asset of an organization. Microsoft cloud services contain many safeguards to prevent unauthorized access to or leaking data in a multi-tenant cloud environment. These include logical isolation with Azure Active Directory authorization and role-based management, storage-level data isolation mechanisms, and tight physical security.

Encryption is the last and strongest line of defense. Microsoft uses some of the strongest encryption protocols in the industry to protect customer data and help you stay in control of it.

3. More threat protection
The cloud enables Microsoft to use all signals, information, and operational experience to deploy and continuously improve high-quality threat protection. From Microsoft 365 to Azure, the power of the cloud provides built-in protection for all of our products and services. Examples include Exchange Online Protection, a global network of data centers that enable multi-layered, real-time protection email protection, and Microsoft Antimalware, a real-time protection feature for identifying and removing viruses, spyware and other malicious software.

4. Increased visibility and reporting
Monitoring and recording security-related events are key components in an effective data protection strategy. Microsoft business services and products provide configurable security audits and log options that help you identify and address gaps in your security policies and mechanisms to prevent breaches.

Microsoft services provide some (and in some cases all) of the following options: centralized monitoring, logging, and analysis systems for continuous visibility, timely alerts, and reports to help you manage the large volume of information generated by devices and services.

What can you do yourself?

Just because your data is in Azure doesn’t mean you can go through life without any worries. You have to contribute to your safety. The resources you use should be as secure as your own environment. But Azure goes to great lengths to keep its platform safe. That’s why they give you all the tools you need to keep your data secure on your side.

A list of advice for you in the warehouse:

  • Don’t share passwords
  • Use complex unique passwords
  • Keep the passwords in a  digital “safe”
  • Secure your Wi-Fi network with a good unique key
  • Make sure you have a good antivirus application
  • Always set up Multi Factor Authentication whenever possible
  • Never log in through public computers
  • Don’t use public free Wi-Fi networks
  • Make sure laptops and mobile phones are always equipped with the latest security updates

Are my data secure in the Azure cloud? Our answer is yes. If you implement the right governance and use the tools offered, your data will be more secure in Azure than in your private network.

Azure spends an enormous amount of time on virtual and physical penetration tests, threat detection and elimination, training, and the development of tools that help you secure your data yourself. There are only a handful of companies that can secure their data separately equally thoroughly.

In the above article, we focused on what Microsoft does and what you can do yourself. Of course, Davanti itself does a lot in its software development to ensure data security; read more here.

CORAX SaaS wms

Evolve Automation introduces CORAX SaaS WMS in the UK market

Innovative Warehouse Management

Evolve Automation has broadened its portfolio with the cloud and SaaS based Warehouse Management System (WMS) CORAX. Evolve Automation is an experienced specialist in efficient and reliable mobile robots for all markets; from e-commerce fulfillment robots to moving any type of goods from A to B in food processing, production, automotive, logistics, supply chain and supermarkets. Evolve is happy to offer its customers a total solution, both for internal, mobile robot solutions and for warehouse management. Both products are fully scalable, can be implemented in a short time and therefore enable a fast ROI.

CORAX is an innovative WMS developed by the Dutch based company Davanti Warehousing. With a WMS you take control over your internal warehousing. CORAX is SaaS (Software as a Service) which means that it’s an online, scalable product; you don’t need any servers or IT infrastructure anymore. When the operation grows, CORAX keeps the same pace. It’s updated every 2 weeks, developed in Microsoft Azure and the data are safely stored in the cloud. It has a Web and an App version; you easily take control over inbound, storage, outbound, returns, BDD etc. in food, 3PL, retail and ecommerce.

Fast and flexible

CORAX has been implemented in small warehouse with only 3 users but also, for example, in US largest coldstore with more than 100,000 pallet places. Because the product is scalable, it’s a very flexible application. This is not a WMS with requires a long term implementation period; you can implement it within a month. Because of the easy interfacing module, you can connect it with numerous applications like ERP, TMS or webshop software.

Scott Hitchin

“The CORAX App is very user-friendly; you can work with both your smart phone and a logistics scanner. This makes starting up very easy. ”

Scott Hitchin CMgr MCMI, Managing Director Evolve Automation Ltd.

Multiple locations and multiple owners

CORAX WMS supports the management and storage of goods from multiple stock owners in a warehouse. This can be different entities within one company or multiple customers of a logistics service provider. At an administrative level, the stocks remain separate but the administrative users and RF users can work for one or more inventory owners at the same time, if authorized.

The WMS also supports inventory management and goods flows across multiple separate storage locations within one and the same installation. Depending on the authorization, a user has access to one or more warehouses or work areas. The stock levels per warehouse and across all warehouses are always known in real time. Every user of the WMS can choose his own language, which is essential in an international environment like many UK companies experience.
